Sri Lanka is blessed with bright sunny beaches and a cool pleasant climate in the hills. A small village in the mountains, Ella’s attractions are filled with interesting places to visit and discover. The famous ‘Ravana Falls’ is a 30 foot drop of gushing water in the mountains. Legend speaks of a cave of gold behind the falls, in which King Ravana of Sri Lanka kept captive the beautiful Indian princess Sita.

Built from rocks, brick and cement during the period of the British, the ‘Demodara Nine Arch’ bridge stands at a staggering height of almost 100 feet. It is also known as ‘The bridge in the Sky’ by the way of the fact that that you can see nine skies by looking up through the arches.

The climate in Ella is Ideal for growing spices and the locals take great pride in their culinary expertise. The Ella spice garden grows a small variety of spices. Visitors are welcome to observe how the spices are grown and how its incorporated into cooking. You may even join a cooking course to receive a hands on experience on the preparation of truly Sri Lankan dishes.

In one of the native languages of Sri Lanka ,’Sinhala’, Ella means waterfall, but visiting waterfalls is just one of the numerous enticements on offer in the area of Ella, which is located 1,041m above sea level. The vivacious surroundings backed by hundreds of green hues, tea plantations and a myriad of shrubs and trees create a breathtaking view from atop the mountainous terrain and even from the tiny boutiques in the city.

The air is fresh, the vegetation is resplendent and the people are welcoming. The area remains unpolluted and uncorrupted by human manifestations as there is a tiny population that lives scattered across.

Of the many Ella attractions, the climb up to Little Adams Peak and Ella Rock are suited for the visitors who are keen on an adventure or want to bump some extra calories.

To shine up the mountains is no mean task and can take a while, but given the climatic conditions, the biggest challenge is to ward off the ubiquitous leeches. Therefore, ensure you go armed with a packet of salt or some soap for protection.
